Happy 50th birthday to Kim Deal, one of the most influential bass players of the past 30 years. In addition to her distinct, rolling bass style, Kim is also an excellent vocalist, capable of projecting an easygoing, free spirited persona that was the ideal foil to Black Francis’ tightly-wound, frantic vocals. I love that when you listen to certain recordings of Kim’s voice, you can hear her smiling through the track.

I could whine a bit about feeling old because women I idolized as a kid are now in their 50s, but that’s stupid and untrue. I’m just glad Kim Deal is still with us.
